Disputes and conflicts are a normal part of life and can arise within families, workplaces, businesses, government and the broader community.
Conflict may result from:
- Differences in the way individuals see things
- Different interpretations of agreements or contracts
- Different ways of communicating
- Different priorities, beliefs, standards, and values
Parkside Counselling & Mediation Centre provides individuals with an opportunity to resolve disputes through mediation. Mediation is a structured process for helping people who have a dispute to be actively engaged in resolving it, and avoiding more formal processes. It is a process that seeks to understand all parties’ interests and find mutual benefits.
Mediation is:
- Interest based negotiation
- Quicker than court, arbitration or tribunal processes
- Less expensive than court
- Often less stressful
A mediator is a neutral third person who encourages those in the dispute to talk to each other about the issues.
The mediator:
- is impartial
- facilitates communication
- helps participants hear and understand each other
- assists participants to generate and evaluate alternatives
Mediators at Parkside Counselling & Mediation Centre are accredited under the National Mediation Accreditation Scheme, are members of the Resolution Institute and practice under these standards and guides.
The Resolution Institute, standards and guides can be found here.
Parkside Counselling & Mediation Centre strives to ensure all parties experience a safe, dignified and affirming mediation.
“As useful as looking for objective reality can be, it is ultimately the reality as each side sees it that constitutes the problem in a negotiation and opens the way to a solution.”
